        • The Backhouse Mill was one of the few grist mills not burned during the American raids in the area. Red coats in the woods, huge bonfires, the bonds of the Masonic Order, or troops lost in the heavily wooded area. Which of these would you think might be the reasons that the 1798 grist mill was not burned during the War of 1812? The original wooden structure, with its hand hewn beams and water wheel, was in operation from 1798 until 1955; making it the longest continually operating grist mill in Ontario. Today, Backhouse Mill is a National Historic Site, operated by the Long Point Region Conservation Authority
