IMPRESSIONS
Soldiers are most needed. Accurate portrayals of other types are also sought: Surgeons, Chaplain, Musicians (Drummers & Pipers especially), Soldiers' Wives & other such civilian followers of the camp. The Unit's portrayal spans the period of 1812 - 1858.
HISTORY
The original 93rd was raised in 1799 from the lands in northern-most Scotland. In 1805 they served in the recapture of the Cape of Good Hope and remained in garrison there until 1814 when they were sent to America for the New Orleans campaign. At New Orleans the 93rd suffered the heaviest British casualties as they remained "firm & immovable as a Brick Wall" (no running through the brambles contrary to a popular song).
The 93rd served with distinction around the world in the following years, always noted for their great sense of duty & discipline. In the Crimean War on 25th October 1854 the 93rd earned immortal fame as, standing alone in line, they repulsed a massed Russian cavalry charge at Balaklava, thus becoming the one and only "THIN RED LINE".
During the 1857 Indian Mutiny the 93rd earned Seven Victoria Crosses at the reliefs of Lucknow. In 1881 the 93rd was amalgamated with the 91st Argyll Highlanders and became The Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, as they are known today.
It is interesting to note the only defeat suffered by the 93rd was at New Orleans where they were ordered to wear trews (pants). At all of their victories the 93rd wore, of course, the KILT.
THE UNIT
The 93rd SHRoFLHU, Inc. was founded in January 1989 as a living memorial to the real 93rd. The "Inc." in the name is due to our non-profit historical organization status. One does not have to be Scottish to participate. The Unit is a member of numerous historical organizations including the Napoleonic Association, North America Brigade-British Forces Overseas, Crimean War Research Society, Victorian Military Society and The Scottish Military Historical Society.
Our Commanding Officer commanded the British Highland Brigade at the 175th and the 180th BATTLE OF WATERLOO Anniversary Reenactments in Belgium in 1990 and 1995, is Acting Adjutant of the North America British Brigade-Napoleonic Association, and is Commander of the "Worldwide" Highland Brigade/1815. The Unit served as a Guard of Honour for Queen Elizabeth II on the Royal Texas Visit in 1991. The Unit has received letters of appreciation from The Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, The Clan Sutherland Societies of North America & Scotland, and Her Majesty The Queen (Colonel- In- Chief of the A & S H).
