The Royal Scots were raised as Dumbarton's Regiment in 1633 under a warrant issued by the Privy Council of Scotland under the authority of King Charles I. They were then sent to serve the French King until 1662. In France they won the place of honour on the right of the line as well as their nickname "Pontius Pilates Body Guard".
The first battalion Royal Scots was posted to the Canadas from the Fever Islands ( the Caribbean ) in July 1812. Although initially stationed in the Maritimes and Lower Canada in 1813 the battaion moved to Upper Canada. The Light Company got as far west as the small town of Delaware on the Thames river in what is now Ontario. For the most part the battalion served on the Niagara peninsula where it earned the battle honour "NIAGARA" for the Grenadier company's bayonet charge at Fort Niagara and the battalions steadiness at the battle of Lundy's Lane. During this time the 2nd Battalion served first in Egypt and then the Caribbean. The 3rd Battalion served in the Peninsula and then Waterloo campaigns and the 4th served at home, in Germany, in Holland and New Orleans.
The re-enactment group is based in the London area. It's main thrust is Living History with strong military and civilian elements. We enjoy good relationships with all other 1812 units and participate in as many events as possible during the year.
The Royals are always looking for new members. Interested persons can contact the regiment at:
